SS8006 Children on Campus Policy

Statement of the Policy

The purpose of this policy is to recognize that in some extenuating circumstances, parents or guardians may need to bring their child(ren) to campus. In general, children, along with their parent or guardian, may visit College offices or facilities for limited periods of time when the parent or guardian is conducting routine business at the College.

Circumstances where the student needs require the child to accompany them to class, permission must be received from the instructor. It is at the instructor’s discretion to grant permission.

Children are not permitted in hazardous locations or identifiable restricted areas. While on campus, children must remain fully under the supervision of their parent/guardian who is responsible to assure that no behaviors inconvenience, endanger, or disrupt the work activities of students, faculty, staff, or other visitors. At no time should ill children be brought to campus.

The College reserves the right to direct that a child be removed from campus where the presence of the child causes an unacceptable health or safety risk or an unreasonable level of disruption to others.

This policy also applies to off-campus sites operated by the College.

Exclusions

These Guidelines do not apply to children visiting the campus to attend College-sponsored events, camps, and programs intended for children and families, community events, or to obtain information regarding college services. These guidelines do not apply to children enrolled in the on-campus childcare center.

To Whom It Applies

This policy applies campus-wide.

Definitions

• Children: Any individual less than 16 years of age.
• Hazardous Locations: Locations include, but are not limited to laboratories, workshops, commercial kitchens, laundry areas, construction areas, mechanical rooms, roofs, confined spaces, maintenance areas, and janitorial rooms.
• Identifiable Restricted Areas: Areas that are not currently deemed restricted but can become dangerous due to construction or other unforeseeable activities.
