AA4027 Medical or Caregiver Withdrawal Policy

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to identify the circumstances under which a student may request a medical or caregiver withdrawal. Internally and for transcript purposes, this is referred to as a medical withdrawal.

Statement of the Policy

A medical or caregiver withdrawal may be initiated by the student or a designated representative. Once approved, a withdrawal will result in the student being formally withdrawn from the College, and all enrolled classes will be removed from their schedule.

Students may apply for a medical or caregiver withdrawal at any point during the semester.

Documentation will be accepted until 30 days following the last day of the classes:

• Medical: If the withdrawal is due to the student’s own illness or medical condition, appropriate documentation from a healthcare provider is required to verify the nature of the condition and its impact on the student’s ability to continue their coursework.
• Caregiver: If the withdrawal is due to the student’s need to provide caregiving support, documentation must outline the caregiving responsibilities and the necessity for the student’s presence, along with any related impact on their academic performance.

A student who is approved for a medical or caregiver withdrawal will be formally withdrawn from the College, and all enrolled classes in current and subsequent semesters will be removed from their schedule. If the student chooses, they can retain their matriculation status as a student for one year, unless they request an extension.

Students who are approved for a medical or caregiver withdrawal receive a “W’ grade for each class. A comment of “Student Granted Medical Withdrawal” will be posted to the student’s official transcript. An approved medical or caregiver withdrawal may negatively impact a student’s academic progress.

To whom it applies

This policy applies to any student enrolled in courses at SUNY Broome who requires a medical or caregiver withdrawal.

Definitions

• Medical Withdrawal – a process by which a student officially withdraws from all courses due to documented medical reasons.
• Caregiving – a student who is responsible for providing care significantly impacting their ability to complete coursework.
• Designated Representative – A person (E.g. family member, legal guardian, healthcare provider or another trusted individual), authorized by the student, to act on their behalf in the process of seeking a medical withdrawal from the College.
• Documented Medical Conditions – medical conditions verified by a licensed healthcare provider that indicate the need for withdrawal.
