Purpose
This procedure outlines the steps a student must follow to voluntarily withdraw or be administratively withdrawn from one or more classes while remaining enrolled in at least one class during the semester.
Statement of the Procedure
1. How to Withdraw
To withdraw from a class, students must complete the Class Withdrawal Request Form, available on the Registrar’s webpage.
2.
Matriculated students must obtain Advisor / Chair / Designee approval on the Class Withdrawal Request From after the start of the term.
3. Timing and Grades
- During the schedule adjustment period (defined below): A withdrawal is treated as a drop. No grade is recorded, and the class will not appear on the transcript.
- After the schedule adjustment period but before the withdrawal deadline: Students who withdraw will receive a grade of “W”. For full term fall and spring classes, the final withdrawal deadline is the end of week 13. Different deadlines apply for shorter terms or special sessions. Specific parts of the term and their corresponding dates are detailed on the College Academic Calendar on the Registrar’s website.
- After the withdrawal deadline: Students may submit a written appeal to the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) if they experience extenuating circumstances.
Administrative Withdrawal
- Students who never attend during the schedule adjustment period date will be administratively dropped. No grade will be issued and the grade will not appear on the transcript.
- Students who are not attending after the schedule adjustment period may be administratively withdrawn and assigned a grade of “WA”.
4. Academic and Financial Impact
- Grades of “W” or “WA” do not affect GPA but do count as attempted hours which may impact Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and financial aid eligibility.
- Students remain responsible for any outstanding financial or other obligations, as outlined in SUNY Broome’s refund policy.
