Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to provide clear, consistent steps for addressing suspected or confirmed violations of the Academic Honesty Policy. These procedures are designed to ensure that students are informed of the concern, given an opportunity to respond, and that any outcomes are applied fairly, consistently, and in alignment with College policy.
Statement of the Procedure
When an instructor suspects a violation of the Academic Honesty Policy, the following steps apply.
Instructor Action on First Violation (Academic Penalty)
- At the instructor’s discretion, they may ask the student to: meet, resubmit the assignment, or complete an alternate assessment, within a timeframe specified by the instructor. The instructor may also impose an academic penalty, such as assigning a reduced or failing grade on the assignment, exam, project, or other academic work in which the violation of academic honesty occurred.
- If the instructor assigns a grade of F on the assessment, they must notify the student via the Academic Honesty Violation Report. The following individuals will also be copied on the notification: the Department Chair for the course, the Department Chair for the student’s academic program, the course’s division Dean, the student’s academic program Dean, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA).
Instructor Action on Second Violation (Academic Penalty)
- A second confirmed violation may result in failure of the entire course.
- If a final grade of “F” is assigned for academic dishonesty it will appear on the transcript. A “W” may not replace an “F” assigned for academic dishonesty.
- The instructor must notify the student via the Academic Honesty Violation Report which is sent to their SUNY Broome email. The following individuals will also be copied on the notification: the Department Chair for the course, the Department
Chair for the student’s academic program, the course’s division Dean, the
student’s academic program Dean, the Registrar, and the VPAA. The Registrar will update the student’s record with the “F” grade and the student is removed from the class. The Registrar will enter the student’s last date of attendance provided by the faculty member.
Appeals
- Students have the right to appeal the academic penalty related to the academic honesty violation within five business days of the grade being issued, using the designated Academic Dishonesty Appeal Form*. A copy of the appeal form will be sent to the Chair of the department that offers the course and the Division Dean of the academic area.
- The Department Chair will review the appeal and issue a response within five business days of the submission. Their decision is final and will be communicated in writing to the student, the instructor, and the Division Dean.
- If the sanction results in an “F” grade for the course, the student may follow the Academic Grievance Procedure. In accordance with that procedure, if the Department Chair is the aggrieved instructor, another faculty member with rank and continuing appointment from the same department shall serve in the Chair’s role; if no such faculty member is available, a Chair from another department within the same division shall serve.
This procedure does not apply to grades issued in the course, with which the student may be dissatisfied, or the final grade in the course. Grievances related to final course grades should follow the Academic Grievance Procedure.
Escalated Academic Honesty Violations (Disciplinary Action)
- Repeated violations may be referred by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, with supporting documentation, to Student Affairs for disciplinary action under the Student Code of Conduct.
- Disciplinary actions may affect a student’s standing at the College and may impact their ability to attend or remain enrolled.
- Dismissals for academic dishonesty will be permanently noted in the student’s record.
Record Keeping
- The College will maintain records of all academic honesty violations through the College’s official designated tracking system. The Dean of Students, instructors, Department Chairs, Deans, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs are responsible for ensuring that violations are accurately documented and reported in accordance with established procedures.
