The Second Chance Scholarship program, established by Dr. Angelo and Kathleen Mastrangelo, recognizes students who demonstrate the potential and motivation to succeed academically despite economic or educational disadvantage.

Program Description

Applicants must be currently enrolled at SUNY Broome Community College. If selected as a recipient, the student may continue in the program for up to four consecutive semesters or until graduation (whichever comes first).

In order to receive scholarship payment and continue in the program, the student must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits and earn at least a 2.0 GPA for the semester. A student may not receive a “D” in any course.

Award amounts are dispersed each semester following the posting of final grades. These amounts are calculated on all grades, including developmental courses, and are based on both credit hours earned and grade point average for that semester. The maximum award is earned with at least 15 credit hours and a 4.0 semester GPA.

Please note:
Federal regulations stipulate that any funds awarded to a student after Federal Student loans have been disbursed must be applied to the principal of the loan in order to lower the amount owed. This action is carried out through the SUNY Broome Financial Aid Office.

Selection Criteria

  • Must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov/fafsa
  • Must be currently enrolled at SUNY Broome in a minimum of 6 credits
  • Must be economically and/or academically disadvantaged
  • Must be motivated to pursue an associate degree to completion

History of the Program

The Second Chance Scholarship program was established in Schenectady, New York, in the late 1980’s by Dr. Angelo Mastrangelo and his wife, Cathleen. The purpose of the scholarship was to assist economically and/or educationally disadvantaged students in the capital region requiring financial support to undertake successfully, post-secondary education. In 1998, Dr. Mastrangelo brought the program to the Broome Community College Foundation.

The scholarship supports students who demonstrate the potential and the desire to continue their formal education and are motivated to succeed, but due to problematic life circumstances, were not able to make the financial commitment. The program helps students realize their full potential by enrolling in degree programs at SUNY Broome to maximize their ability to obtain higher education.
