Facilities
Caring for the campus we share.
Facilities is responsible for the buildings, grounds, and systems that make campus life possible — and everyone who lives, works, or studies here plays a part in keeping them in good shape. This page is a starting point: how to report a problem, what to expect from a renovation, and how you can help care for the spaces we all rely on.
What Facilities Does
Facilities covers four main areas:
- Custodial Services — daily cleaning and upkeep of campus buildings
- Maintenance — repairs, building systems, and preventive care
- Capital Project Management — renovations, construction, and major building improvements
- Sustainability Advocacy — promoting energy efficiency, responsible resource use, and long-term environmental stewardship across campus
Whether it’s a leaking faucet, a construction project down the hall, or a question about how campus buildings work, this is the team working to make it happen.

Everyday Campus Care
Small habits make a big difference in how well our buildings function — and how long they last.
- Report leaks right away. A small leak reported early is a quick fix. Left alone, it can mean mold, damaged finishes, and a much bigger repair.
- Keep shared workspaces tidy. Clutter makes it harder for custodial staff to clean thoroughly and can be a safety hazard in labs, classrooms, and common areas.
- Tidy up before you go. Whether it’s a study lounge, kitchenette, or event space, clearing your waste and wiping down surfaces when you’re done helps keep shared spaces usable for the next person.
- See something that needs attention? Don’t wait — submit a work order. It’s the fastest way to get it into the queue.
Report an Issue (Work Orders)
Noticed something broken, unsafe, or in need of repair? Here’s how to get it to us:
- Submit a work order:
- Call Maintenance: 607-778-5007, during active hours: 7am until 3:30pm
Email the Facilities team: facilities@sunybroome.edu
Students: if you notice an issue, please let a staff or faculty member know so they can submit the work order on your behalf.

Renovations
Renovations range from a single-room refresh to a full building overhaul — and even small-looking projects often carry a long runway.
Why does this take so long?
It typically takes at least six to nine months from the time a renovation is funded to the day construction actually begins. That time isn’t idle — it covers:
- Procurement — competitively soliciting and selecting contractors and consultants under NYS public procurement requirements
- Permitting — Broome County reviews and issues building permits for projects that involve extending or reconfiguring building systems (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, etc.)
- Design & coordination — working with architects, engineers, and campus stakeholders to finalize scope before work can start
We know the wait can be frustrating when you’re looking at a space that needs help. Understanding the process is the first step — we’re working on it long before you see anyone on-site.

Facilities Standards
Facilities is developing campus-wide construction and design standards — covering everything from finishes to systems to hardware.
Consistent standards mean:
- Faster, more efficient maintenance (fewer one-off parts and finishes to track)
- More consistent quality and appearance across campus
- Lower long-term costs, since new work matches what our team already knows how to maintain
Working Together: Facilities & Campus Partners
Big or small, most facilities work touches other departments across campus. Here’s who we typically work with, and why:
| Department | Role in the Process |
|---|---|
| Finance | Budgeting and funding for capital projects |
| ITS | Network, data, and technology infrastructure in renovated or new spaces |
| MarCom | Signage, wayfinding, and communicating project impacts to campus |
| Accessibility Resources Office | Ensuring spaces meet accessibility needs and requirements |
| Public Safety / Environmental Health & Safety | Life safety, environmental compliance, and site safety during construction |
| Purchasing/Procurement | Competitive bidding and contract award for construction and services |
Knowing who’s involved — and why — helps explain why some requests take a village, not just a work order.
