Application for Reinstatement following an academic dismissal

A student who does not meet the minimum Standards for Academic Progress requirements after being on Academic and Financial Aid Warning for one term will be academically dismissed. A student who has been academically dismissed may apply for reinstatement to the Academic Dismissal/Reinstatement Committee on the basis of: injury or illness, the death of a relative, or other special circumstances, with appropriate documentation.*

*More information on this can be found under “Apply for Reinstatement following an academic dismissal”

A student who has been academically dismissed from a program and does not wish to apply for reinstatement may continue to attend as a non-matriculated student. A non-matriculated student may continue to take classes, but is not enrolled (matriculated) in a program and is not eligible for financial aid.

Please select an option below to learn more information.

You can enroll as a non-matriculated student at SUNY Broome if you do not wish to apply for reinstatement. Non-matriculated students take courses but are not enrolled in a formal degree program and therefore do not receive financial aid. Students enrolled non-matriculated may utilize campus support services, but will be responsible for all tuition and fees associated with their course(s) without the aid of Federal financial aid.

Notes: Students who chose to take classes as a non-matriculated student and who meet Standards for Academic Progress requirements within 3 consecutive terms from Academic Dismissal (fall, spring, or summer) may be readmitted into their previous program of study without re-applying through Admissions*. Students who take longer than 3 consecutive terms (fall, spring, or summer) to meet SAP requirements need to apply through Admissions to be readmitted.

*Competitive admission programs may have different requirements for readmission. If you wish to enroll as a non-matriculated student, please use:  Course Registration for Non-Matriculated Students form.

A student may apply for reinstatement to the Academic Dismissal/Reinstatement Committee on the basis of: injury or illness, the death of a relative, or other special circumstances, with appropriate documentation.*

The spring 2026 application for reinstatement will open on Monday, September 15 at 8 a.m. and close on December 15, 2025 at 5 p.m. Your application and relevant documentation needs to be submitted prior to the deadline.

Note: Students who are in a degree program (matriculated) during a fall semester and are dismissed from the fall semester are not eligible to apply for spring reinstatement. Fall students who are dismissed need to wait and apply for reinstatement for fall 2026.

*Documentation is required in order for your application to be reviewed. Examples of relevant documentation (this list is not exhaustive):

  • Illness or Injury: A note from your doctor, hospital discharge paperwork, ER visit summary, or documentation from a mental health professional
  • Loss of a Family Member: A copy of a death certificate, obituary, or a letter from a funeral home, clergy member, or hospital

If some time has passed and you no longer have access to documents related to the original circumstance, we understand. In those cases, you may submit other information that demonstrates your readiness to return to college. Examples include:

Application for Reinstatement

What are the next steps if my application for reinstatement is approved?

If your application is approved, you will be required to develop an academic recovery plan that will detail how you will progress and get back into Good Academic Standing. Information on creating an academic recovery plan will be sent to the email address you listed on your application for reinstatement.

What happens if I was previously on an Academic Recovery Plan or Academic Continuance Plan?

If you have not met the requirements of a previous plan, you incurred a permanent loss of financial aid here at SUNY Broome, and therefore, can only attend SUNY Broome as a non-matriculated student without the assistance of PELL, TAP or Federal student loans until such time as you meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.

When will my academic dismissal hold be lifted?

Your academic dismissal hold will not be lifted until your application is approved and you have created an academic recovery plan.

What happens if my application for reinstatement is denied?

A student who has their application for reinstatement after academic dismissal denied by the Academic Dismissal/Reinstatement Committee has the opportunity to appeal the decision to the Vice President for Academic Affairs or attend SUNY Broome as a non-matriculated student.

What is the spring 2026 reinstatement deadline?

The spring 2026 reinstatement deadline is December 15 at 5 p.m.

When will I hear back about my application?

Applicants will typically hear back about a month after they submit the application.
