Together, We Make It Happen!

In 2024, 24 Hours of Giving inspired 589 donors to give $210,907!

Seeing so many members of the College community and SUNY Broome supporters come together last year during our largest day of fundraising was genuinely inspiring. Donor generosity fuels scholarships, resources, and opportunities for our students. Our students truly appreciate your commitment to their success.

Can we top last year’s remarkable results? Let’s see if we can raise even more in 2025!

From all of us at SUNY Broome — and in advance — we want to say… Thank you!

Donor Stories

There are hundreds of individuals who support SUNY Broome.

Enjoy the brief stories of a few of our long-time donors (in the boxes to the right).

Alumna & Donor

“I am honored to be a part of SUNY Broome’s Day of Giving.

I will always treasure my time at Broome (1981-1983). The educational programs, as well as the teaching and guidance by the faculty, were instrumental in directing me to a field that was very exciting and challenging. My time at Broome provided me with wonderful opportunities and prepared me well for a successful career. ”

Professor Emeritus of Engineering Science/Physics/Physical Science Departments

“I contribute to the SUNY Broome Foundation because the opportunities and assistance afforded students at SUNY Broome constitute a vital community asset.

The Foundation — through scholarships, student awards, teaching grants, campus improvements, and more — supports all these facets of educational excellence at SUNY Broome.”

Proud Donors to the Domenica and Antonio Paniccia Dream Scholarship

“Growing up, our parents always told us, ‘You must go to college.’ They never had the opportunity to receive more than a fifth-grade education, but they wanted a better life for us and instilled in us the importance of an education.

Because of their encouragement, Mario earned a Ph.D. in Physics, Loreta received a Master’s in Education, and I hold a B.S. in Engineering and a J.D. in Law.

We donate to SUNY Broome because we want others to have the same opportunities we had to receive an education.”

Alumni & Donor

“It is not an overstatement to say that I owe so much of both my personal and professional success to the foundation that was set in place by my attendance at Broome. From teachers, staff, fellow classmates, and teammates, I formed a long-lasting bond to the institution.

For this reason, I choose to give back to the College.”

2025 Scholarship Reception - A large cohort of scholarship recipients with Dr. Hawkins.

Here are a few recent stories of how generosity impacted our College.

Rhoda’s Roots team (led by Dani Berchtold) photo of the food pantry

Supplies in The Hornet Hope Center (HHC) were running quite low. With an average of 120 visits to the on-campus food pantry and clothing closet, the shelves, fridges, and clothing hangers needed replenishing.

Fortunately, the SUNY Broome community (primarily employees) and other generous donors came to the rescue! During the College’s second annual Hornet Hope Center Challenge, donors supplied more than 3,000 pounds of food, 250 pounds of hygiene products, and over $1,400 in cash. This four-week challenge took place from October 27 to November 21, 2025.

Visit The Hornet Hope Center website to learn about how the HHC operates and how to donate food, clothing, hygiene supplies, or household items.

Cory grins as he holds up a thank you sign. Lian smiles and holds a thank you sign.In honor of 24 Hours of Giving’s vital effort to help students afford their education, the SUNY Broome Foundation is pleased to share a few stories of our 2025 scholarship winners.

Cory, a United States Marine Corps veteran, chose military service after high school because he didn’t think he was ready for college at that time. After his college education, he plans to become a radiographer.

He told his donors, “With your aid, I can continue the program and finish strong in this new chapter of my life. I can confidently say that I will give nothing but my best going forward.”

Lian (PT ’20) is a physical therapist assistant who works with autistic and epileptic young adults. She intends to complete another associate degree at SUNY Broome (this one in engineering) and then transfer to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Ultimately, Lian hopes to design and produce prosthetics and other devices that will enhance individuals’ independence.

She told her donors that her scholarship will “assist in alleviating the financial burden [and] also enable me to spend more time with my two-year-old daughter…”

Alisha wears a SUNY Broome nursing shirt. The SUNY Broome community has a proud tradition of coming together to help students access and afford a quality education. Private support not only makes a tangible difference in students’ lives, but also provides powerful encouragement. When a student receives a scholarship, they recognize that someone believes in their potential and is invested in their future success.

In honor of 24 Hours of Giving — SUNY Broome’s most important day of fundraising and College support — on December 2, 2025, we are honored to highlight the profound impact of SUNY Broome scholarships.

Alisha keeps busy balancing being a college student, a mom of three, and working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She shared with her scholarship donors, “Your generous support means so much to me and my family…”

On May 7, 2025, the SUNY Broome Ice Center buzzed with excitement during the Student Awards Recognition Reception. This annual celebration highlights our students’ achievements, the scholarships that empower them, and our generous donors who fund these scholarships. The SUNY Broome Foundation awarded more than 375 merit-based scholarships at the reception.

Remembering Aleen: SUNY Broome nursing graduates honor the memory of Aleen Ameen and support her scholarship

Nursing graduates in the front row at the Pinning Ceremony Spring 2025

When the 2025 nursing class pinning committee met to begin planning this year’s Nursing Pinning Ceremony, they still felt the monumental loss of one of their own. Nursing class president Caitlyn O’Reilly (RN ’25) remembers, “When we were in the planning stages for this ceremony, our goal was to honor and remember Aleen in a special way [during the pinning] as she should’ve been here with us to receive her pin.”

This year, the nursing class’s year-long fundraising efforts allowed them to donate $2,500 to the Aleen Ameen Memorial Award for Excellence in Nursing scholarship, which had already been established by her loved ones. So far, the scholarship has helped two students fund their education…

scholarship reception Approximately 375 need-based or merit-based scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students. Because of private support, hundreds of students are recognized for their hard work and can achieve their goals with less debt.

SUNY Broome also awards many students in need with grants-in-aid, without requiring them to apply for the assistance (which is necessary to be considered for a scholarship).

The Student Emergency Fund helps SUNY Broome students in times of need to stay in college and move into a brighter tomorrow. The fund grants up to $500 for documented emergency expenses, such as unexpected medical bills, car repairs, and more, to students in need.

In March 2024, The Hornet Hope Center (HHC), the on-campus food pantry and clothing closet, underwent a significant upgrade from the previous food pantry system to improve SUNY Broome’s ability to meet the needs of our students. The HHC assists those who are struggling and have limited ability to purchase or access sufficient food or other essential items and supplies. It has become a vital resource on campus for those in need.

The HHC accepts food donations, as well as supplies for personal hygiene, school and household use, clothing, and items for young children. For more information, visit the HHC website.
