Theater at SUNY Broome
Note: this is an advised area of interest, not a specific program.
Students interested in theater, or transferring to a four-year institution to major in theater, can complete an Individual Studies A.S. with electives that focus on this area of interest. For more than 50 years, SUNY Broome’s Theater Department has been training students for a life in the performing arts. Here you can study with distinguished faculty who are seasoned professionals in their area of expertise.
Our actor training is Stanislavski-based, rigorous and highly regarded, proven by the success of our shows and the graduates who go onto work in the industry. The theater productions are noted for their high quality and ambitiousness, with an emphasis on the best of dramatic literature. SUNY Broome’s theater students leave with solid skills and an honest view of themselves as actors or theater professionals. There are also opportunities to study directing, stage management, set construction, dramaturgy and sound and lighting design.
The Associate of Science degree focuses on theater within the context of a liberal arts education. We give students a solid foundation for transfer to four-year colleges, conservatory theater schools or to work immediately in the industry. Your studies will include courses in Acting I, II and III, Stagecraft, Oral Interpretation, Theater History, Theater Appreciation, Rehearsal and Performance for the Stage, Periods & Styles of Acting, and Announcing for TV & Radio.

SUNY Broome theater students are well placed in academic theater programs throughout the country and are working in the professional world in New York and LA.
The career options for students with a focus in theater are vast. Some examples are:
- Administration - Marketing/Public Relations,
- Teaching - high school or college level or in a private setting in a variety of subjects,
- Performer - actor, director, dancer, television / radio announcer
- Technical - lighting, scene, costume design, stage management, special effects,
- Writing - arts journalist, television writer, editor or publicist.

Spring 2024: Noises Off (Theater Club)
SUNY Broome Theater Club presents Noises Off, written by Michael Frayn and directed by Kirsten Groats and Israel Sepulveda on the 12th and 13th of April at 7pm.
This 1982 comedy follows the rehearsal and performances of Nothing On, a bedroom farce play within a play, and the relationships between the actors both before and during their performances.
Spring 2024: The Importance of Being Earnest (THR 256)
SUNY Broome Theater presents The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde and directed by Mary Donnelly and assistant director Cooper Ely on the 26th and 27th of April at 7pm.
Published in 1895, this 3 act farce follows John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff who, through the use of false personae, attempt to escape their social obligations in late Victorian London.
