Paralegal: A.A.S.

Program Mission
The mission of the A.A.S. in Paralegal program is to educate and prepare students for entry-level careers in legal services.
Program Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify and describe local, state, and federal legal systems, concepts and terms.
  2. Communicate effectively in organizational settings.
  3. Identify and apply concepts of management.
  4. Analyze and respond effectively to legal and ethical situations in diverse organizations.

Prepare for a rewarding career in law.

The AAS in Paralegal Studies prepares graduates to become paralegals and legal assistants. Paralegals are highly skilled paraprofessionals who work closely with attorneys, judges, prosecutors or public defenders. They work under the supervision of an attorney interviewing clients, investigating facts, drafting documents and researching the law. The paralegal professional enjoys a wide variety of assignments, projects and functions. Some paralegals specialize in certain areas such as civil litigation, real estate, corporate law or estate planning.

Paralegals can find positions in various organizations such as large corporations, insurance companies, private law firms, banks, district attorney offices, real estate agencies, title companies, courts and government agencies.

Students interested in transferring for a four-year degree in the legal field are advised to work closely and early with a SUNY Broome transfer counselor.
