Mechatronics: Certificate
Program Mission
Program Learning Outcomes
- Measure and analyze site and system data.
- Write basic digital control code using Programmable Logic devices (PLCs).
- Troubleshoot problems and optimize electro-mechanical systems.
- Repair electrical and mechanical devices.
- Design a mechatronic system with industry standard nomenclature and symbols.
A mechatronics degree integrates mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and control engineering to design, develop, and control advanced systems. Students study topics like dynamics, thermodynamics, and materials science from mechanical engineering, circuits, electronics, and power systems from electrical engineering, programming languages and algorithms from computer science, and feedback control systems and signal processing from control engineering. Additionally, they delve into robotics, covering kinematics and robot programming, and automation technologies like Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). Graduates can pursue careers in robotics, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, healthcare, and consumer electronics with job titles such as mechatronics engineer, robotics engineer, or automation engineer.
The actual work that is performed by Mechatronics Engineers includes but is not limited to:
- Installation and Maintenance: Install, maintain, and repair complex machinery integrating mechanical, electrical, and computer systems.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve issues in machinery by utilizing knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and computer systems.
- Programming and Calibration: Write or modify code for controlling machinery and calibrate sensors and actuators.
- Testing and Quality Assurance: Conduct testing to ensure functionality and safety of the equipment, and verify compliance with standards.
- Design and Collaboration: Work with engineers and professionals to develop and enhance products and systems.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain records of maintenance activities, procedures, and technical data.
