Iceland | EAS 213: Geoscience Field Experience in Iceland

Summer 2024

Participate in a global field experience in the land of fire and ice. From waterfalls and glaciers to hot springs and volcanoes, Iceland is a land of geological phenomena. This two-credit field experience course covers geological and environmental aspects of Iceland through pre-trip online study and a week-long field experience in Iceland. Students are required to keep field notebooks and collect and analyze environmental data.

This two-credit seminar course covers geologic and environmental aspects of Iceland through a week long study. Students will select topics for in-depth study to be presented upon course completion.

Day 1: Fly overnight to Iceland

  • Depart SUNY Broome campus and drive via vans to NY-based International Airport
  • Fly overnight to Keflavik Airport (KEF), Iceland

Day 2: Reykjanes Region

  • Reykjanes Region and site of the 2021-2022 Volcanic Eruptions
  • Lodging in or near Selfoss

Day 3:

  • Golden Circle/Thingvellir/Gulfoss Region
  • Lodging in or near Selfoss

Day 4:

  • Stöng Archeological Site/Gjáin and Hekla Region
  • Lodging in or near Selfoss

Day 5:

  • South Coast Iceland, Glacier Hike, Skógafoss
  • Lodging in or near Selfoss

Day 6:

  • Reykjadalur Geothermal area
  • Lodging in Reykjavik

Day 7:

  • Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon geothermal experience
  • Group Icelandic dinner in Reykjavik
  • Lodging in Reykjavík

Day 8: Depart for home

  • Free time in Reykjavik
  • Flight to NY
  • Arrive in NY, return to campus via van
Total estimate travel cost: $3,000 (Price may change and it will depend on number of students enrolled) Includes:
