Nursing: Transition Course Pathway for LPNs and Certified EMT-Ps

SUNY Broome Nursing’s Transition Pathway allows eligible Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Advanced Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedics (AEMT-Ps) to earn an AAS in Nursing with fewer nursing courses. Recognizing prior learning and experiences of LPNs and Certified AEMT-Ps, this six credit course focuses on the RN scope of practice and emphasizes the nursing process in the development of problem solving and critical thinking skills needed by RNs in today’s healthcare environments. Successful completion of the course allows students to move into senior level nursing courses. Transition pathway students have the choice of completing the senior level nursing courses in either the daytime and/or the evening-weekend program options.
Applications for the LPN/EMT-P Pathway are due by February 1, the deadline for all competitive admissions programs. Candidates who are accepted into this pathway will begin their studies in the Fall semester by completing ADN 110, PSY 110, BIO 131, and ENG 110, with a C or better in each course. Successful candidates will then move on to take ADN 197 -Transitioning to the RN Role for LPNS and Certified Paramedics in the Spring semester.
Prerequisites for ADN197: Evidence of completion of the following college-level coursework must be met before enrollment in ADN197 – Transitioning to the RN Role for LPNs and certified Paramedics (AEMT-Ps). Students must receive a “C” or higher in all courses required for the nursing program.
