Mission

Academic Advising at SUNY Broome strives to educate, empower and serve students in their quest for academic success.

  • Academic Advisors educate students on degree requirements, General Education requirements and academic standards, policies and procedures.
  • Academic Advisors empower students by providing them with the information and tools necessary to make sound academic decisions.
  • Academic Advisors serve as a resource to the campus community, as an advocate and to the community at large.

Goals:

  • Provide a safe, respectful, and confidential space for students to ask questions and discuss their educational plans and career goals.
  • Review and effectively communicate degree requirements to students.
  • Assist and support students in making academic decisions.
  • Make appropriate referrals to SUNY Broome resources
  • Be easily accessible to students for appointments, walk-ins, and through email
  • Advocate on a student’s behalf whenever necessary.
  • Provide an honest assessment of a student’s competitiveness as a Health Science program applicant to those seeking Health Science careers (if applicable).

Learning Outcomes

Through the advising process, students will be able to:

  • Create realistic and achievable educational plans, including short and long-term strategies to meet those plans.
  • Clarify life, career and transfer goals, explore transfer options and procedures.
  • Locate relevant information on the SUNY Broome website, including institutional policies, procedures, and important dates such as last day to withdraw and registration for upcoming semester.
  • Distinguish between general education and program requirements and demonstrate appreciation of the value of general education for life-long learning.
  • Utilize the Degree Works Audit (My College) to assist in the selection of appropriate courses to meet graduation requirements (i.e. the Writing Emphasis requirement)
  • Learn about unique academic opportunities, such as Service Learning, Honors Courses, Internships, Learning Communities and campus support services.
  • Educate students on the link between academic standing and financial aid eligibility.
  • Participate in Academic Programs, Transfer Day and Career Exploration activities.
  • Help students complete degree/certificate programs and transfer successfully
