SUNY Broome & Binghamton University – Potential Collaboration FAQ

Binghamton University and SUNY Broome have begun to explore the potential for significantly enhancing our existing partnerships by developing new collaborations between the two institutions.

Goals in these discussions between the college and university range from increasing student success and taking advantage of even stronger seamless transfer opportunities, to creating new synergies and efficiencies between our administrative teams. The proposed new structure would also provide a powerful market impact for SUNY Broome and increase transfers to Binghamton University while we are already their largest transfer institution. This would help us to extend our reach and offer exciting new, streamlined degree pathways to students.

For the most up-to-date information, please see below. Information will be added and edited regularly. Details are subject to change as matters progress.

Is there a proposal to merge SUNY Broome with Binghamton University?
No. We are exploring further partnerships to possibly integrate some operations with the University.
Will SUNY Broome’s mission change in any way?
No. SUNY Broome’s Open Access mission would remain paramount in any enhanced relationship. Our role as the community’s college would be strengthened, while providing added benefits to our strong regional workforce development commitments and employer partnerships.
Will tuition increase at SUNY Broome due to any collaborations?
No. Our tuition rates would remain fully separate from Binghamton’s. We would continue to offer the best value in the region for our students.
Will admission to SUNY Broome become more competitive?
No. SUNY Broome will remain an Open Access institution and will continue to support all members of the learning community by creating access to inclusive, diverse educational experiences. As always, there is room for all. We are the perfect place to get a great start on your education, prepare to change careers, or pick up where you left off.
Will this potential collaboration impact my SUNY Broome acceptance for an upcoming semester?
No. All of the college’s enrollment processes will remain the same or be enhanced. We are very excited to see you on our campus. Apply now if you haven’t already!
Is SUNY Broome still a strong community Institution?
Yes, and the proposed collaboration brings potential to become even stronger. Applications are up and, although it’s been a rough few years due to the pandemic, we have survived it quite well. After 75 years as a pillar of the community, we are very excited for the future regardless of how these discussions progress. Conversations regarding collaborations have been taking place for many years. We have always seen some significant potential benefits to a closer relationship with our sister SUNY institutions
Will people lose their jobs if collaborations occur?
No. The intent with an enhanced partnership is for all jobs to remain intact. We see an opportunity to better serve our students through value-added collaboration in areas where it provides the most benefit to our community.
Will associate degrees still be offered?
Yes, associate degrees will continue to be offered along with our many options for credit and non-credit coursework, flexible learning modalities, short-term credentials, and certificate programs. Our goals remain to help students quickly transition into the workforce, brush up on skills, learn new things, or seamlessly transfer to a four-year institution of their choice.
How will this affect SUNY Broome sports and athletics?
As currently proposed, SUNY Broome would keep separate athletics programs, mascots, and school colors.
What kind of impact will there be to high school, concurrent enrollment/Fast Forward, and P-Tech students?
A collaboration would benefit these students greatly by improving and expanding dual enrollment options!
Will the SUNY Broome campus remain open?
Yes, campus facilities and all classroom, student service, and HR operations would remain as they are today.
How would the collaboration impact the SUNY Broome Foundation and their mission to assist students in need and support campus innovation?
The mission of SUNY Broome’s Foundation would not change; they will continue efforts into the future to raise and administer private support for students, faculty, and campus as they do today.
How fast is this all happening?
Discussions on collaborations are at a preliminary stage. Most importantly, none of these proposed business-level collaborations would impact student enrollment (other than to enhance experiences and provide more options).
When will there be more information?
As our discussions are still at a very early stage, further information will be provided as we progress. SUNY Broome will be working closely with Binghamton University to coordinate updates and communications. We anticipate further details may be available after the holidays.
