A Day at The White House
(Note: Alexa Rudik is one of three dozen BCC students who traveled to Washington on the annual Political Science Club trip. Through extraordinary coincidence, our group was the White House on the day President Obama signed historic Health Reform legislation into law. The BCC group also met for 90-minutes with Heather Higginbottom, a member of the Obama Administration. Ms. Rudik wrote the following personal narrative as an assignment for her COM-150 Public Relations class)
This year I had the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. with Broome Community College’s Political Science Club. This is the fifteenth year the club has visited D.C., however this year’s trip was particularly eventful. The group of 35 students and four faculty members had the chance to tour the White House and meet with a member of President Obama’s administration, who is also a native of Binghamton.
When we reached the White House common grounds we met White House Intern Rose. Rose led us to a conference room just steps from the White House. As we were walking to the conference room, members of the media along with political figures had just left the White House where the historic Health Care Legislation had just been signed by President Obama. By the looks on their faces and big smiles we could tell they had just witnessed history. Read the rest of this entry »

The BCC group was at The White House on Tuesday, waiting for their tour, when President Obama signed historic Health Care Reform legislation into law in the East Room of the White House.
HEALTH CARE BILL AND WHITE HOUSE MEETING CAP BCC D.C. TRIP
Broome Community College students and faculty hit an education jackpot on their annual Washington, D.C. trip in March when they arrived for their White House tour as President Obama was signing the historic Health Care Reform bill and, as part of their tour, had the opportunity to meet with a member of the Obama administration who is a Binghamton native.
Nearly 40 BCC students and instructors were originally scheduled to take a tour of the White House at 9 a.m. Tuesday March 23 but were notified Monday night the tour had been scheduled later because of the scheduled signing of the legislation. The tour was rescheduled for 12:20 p.m., about an hour after President Obama signed the bill at 11:15. Read the rest of this entry »

From Cancer Alley, LA to Broome Community College:
Environmental Injustice and PVC-Free Schools
WHEN: April 20th 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
WHERE: BROOME COMMUNITY COLLEGE, Decker Building room 201
Lois Gibbs, founder of the Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ), is coming to Broome Community College as part of a statewide speaking tour of NY colleges this April. Lois founded CHEJ after winning the nation’s first community relocation of 900 families due to a leaking toxic waste dump in Love Canal (Niagara Falls), New York.
Lois is a dynamic and inspiring speaker. At the event, she’ll be discussing how her experiences at Love Canal connect with CHEJ’s new PVC-free schools campaign. Learn about PVC, the most toxic plastic for our health and environment. Find out how the PVC industry is poisoning environmental justice communities in Louisiana, and where PVC may be hiding on your campus. Learn how chemicals such as phthalates and Dioxins are released by PVC and are linked to breast cancer, reproductive health problems, asthma, and learning disabilities. Find out how you can kick PVC off your campus by starting a new PVC-Free Schools Campaign at your University and stand in solidarity with environmental justice communities impacted by PVC’s toxic lifecycle. Campus Watch: April 2010
Although BCC continues to maintain a high grade for safety, we are not immune to perpetrators who are willing to take advantage of opportunities to challenge us. Students that do not take steps to protect themselves and their valuables can fall prey to these individuals. Campus Safety would like to remind students to secure gym lockers with a lock. Vehicles should be kept locked as well.
For more information on crime prevention and BCC Crime Statics (Daily Log and Annual Clery Report), visit the Camps Safety web site at:
