They both share reputations as college classics, yet ramen noodles are noticeably missing from John Belushi’s plate during the (in)famous Animal House food fight scene.

Bluto gave it a pass, but ramen has long been a staple of the university diet. You can easily pick it up from your local grocery store for as little as 10 cents a pack in a variety of flavors. Ramen recipes are a perfect choice for cash- and time-strapped youngsters on the prowl for simple college student fare. Read the rest of this entry »

On the first day of class, everything N.C. Central University junior Ricky Magwood wore was much too big for him — from a billowy white T-shirt to the gold chain dangling nearly to his waist.

But it’s hot out, Magwood argued. And he’s an art student, so he’s going to get messy anyhow.

Ricky: Your chancellor would like a word with you.

NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms thinks eye-catching outfits — whether risque or just-plain sloppy — are obstacles to learning. This fall, he’s put in motion a subtle campaign to eliminate everything from pajama pants to plunging necklines. Read the rest of this entry »

Your so-called “negative attitude” could be an underlying mood disorder

Learn more at Broome Community College’s National Depression Screening Day event on Thursday October 7th at the Baldwin Gym

Sometimes, on bad days, it’s inevitable.  Negative thoughts just pour out of you:  “There’s no point in trying.”  “Can’t anything go right in my life?”  “It probably won’t work out.”

For many people, pessimism can be a source of sardonic humor and even a coping mechanism.  Individuals that fall into this category may feel that they are actually avoiding disappointments by preparing for the worst.  But if your Double Downer attitude interferes with everyday activities and interpersonal relationships, it may mean more than just a temperamental trait.  Having a negative outlook on life can be a sign of depression or can increase the chances of becoming depressed.

If you can’t remember the last time you felt optimistic or hopeful, take advantage of BCC’s National Depression Screening Day event on Thursday October 7, 2010. As part of the program you will have the opportunity to complete a brief, written questionnaire; learn about the symptoms of depression, and how to help a friend or family member who may be at risk.  You will also have the option of talking to a health care professional about any concerns you may have.  Screenings will be offered from 10am-1pm at the Baldwin Gym.

Some symptoms of depression include:

  • Persistent sad, anxious or empty mood
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary activities
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Inability to sleep or oversleeping
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Unexplained aches and pains

Worried you might be depressed? Come see us.  Worried about someone else? Come by and we’ll help.

Tom Grisel, Team Captain; Chester Cheeta; Shirley Lutsic; Pat Yenik; Denise Rogers; and family and friends, all worked together selling hotdogs, chicken spiedie subs, and meatball subs to help raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The event opened with the National Anthem and then the survivor’s lap.  The crowd stood and applauded the survivors as they walked their lap around the track.  One cancer survivor said he felt like a hero as the crowd applauded.  There were many entertaining and enjoyable events through-out the evening and into the next morning.  Fun was had by all that attended.

The luminary ceremony was especially moving.  Hundreds of white luminaries celebrating the lives of cancer survivors and memorializing the lives of those lost to cancer where lit around the track.  Then the bag pipers began to play and walked the track with hundreds of people holding lit candles following behind.

-1240 Students Will Graduate As 2010 Semester Concludes-

(TOWN OF DICKINSON, NY) Broome Community College President Dr. Kevin E. Drumm will host the spring 2010 graduation ceremony at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, which is located in downtown Binghamton.

Dr. Drumm will welcome students, as well as local dignitaries from across the region, parents, family and friends of BCC’s 1240 graduates.

Graduation is an opportunity for students, their family members and friends to celebrate several year’s worth of commitment, dedication and sacrifice by graduates. A community’s greatest obligation is to develop and educate its young people in what is becoming a more difficult world swirling with diverse beliefs and philosophies. On Thursday we will congratulate every student for meriting a College diploma, which will enable them to live a better life.

Of the 1240 graduates, 502 (40 %) are male while 738 (60 %) are female. The ages of the graduates range from 18 to 70, with an average age of 26. Approximately 60% of the graduates are traditional, while 40% are non-traditional.

The most popular graduating major is Liberal Arts, Associate in Arts.

The graduation ceremony will be streamed live over the Internet on the BCC website at www.sunybroome.edu. This is the first time ever those not able to attend can watch over the Internet. In addition families of international students will be able to watch graduation via web streaming.

On behalf of the Broome Community College Class of 2010, it gives me great pleasure to cordially invite you to attend BCC’s Commencement ceremony.  The exercises will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 20th,  in the Broome County Veterans’ Memorial Arena.

Each year, hundreds of graduates, accompanied by thousands of friends and family, fill the Arena for the finale of their BCC experience.  It is a proud moment for our students and for those who worked so closely with them.  I am sure the graduates would be pleased to see you in attendance honoring their accomplishments.

I look forward to seeing you with our students on Graduation night.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kevin Drumm
President
